Who are CASA's Trainers and Coaches? CASA is extremely fortunate to have access to some of the best coaches and trainers in the region for our club. CASA coaches include current assistant and head coaches from Clemson University, Anderson University, and Tri-County Technical College as well as former professional- and college-level players. Haven Bruce, Director of Coaching
|
|
|
Haven Bruce's passion for soccer has taken central stage in his life since the age of 4 when he began playing for the U-6 Grasshoppers in Tyler, TX. His enthusiasm, skill, and sheer determination have taken him across the country as well as to Central America to play and explore the game.
As a player, he began his professional soccer career at the age of 18, in Costa Rica, where he played for Asociacian Deportiva San Carlos. Upon returning to the United States, he played for the Wilmington Hammerheads in Wilmington, NC. His professional career eventually lead him to a stint in Harrisburg, PA, playing for the Harrisburg City Islanders and Greenville, SC, where he would play for the Greenville Lions and embark on his professional coaching career.
He has coached for the Carolina Elite Soccer Academy and the SCYSA-Easley Club and has lead numerous teams in capturing the South Carolina State Championship. His commitment to and fervor for the game is contagious, influencing the youth he coaches as well as their parents. As the Director of Coaching for the Clemson Anderson Soccer Alliance, Haven is looking forward to encouraging excellence in youth soccer.

Rob Miller
|
|
|
Rob is the Head Men's Soccer Coach at Anderson College: MSC Coach of the year 1996, 1998, 2000; 3 MSC Titles; Career coaching record stands at 152-71-7; 2000 Kentucky State Coach of the Year; holds a NSCAA Premier Diploma and an Advanced National Diploma in coaching. Rob is a member of the South Carolina Olympic Development Staff. He has coached professionally with the Lexington Bandits and the Greenville Lions of the USL.

Mike Potempa
|
|
|
Mike Potempa is currently a men’s assistant coach at Clemson University and holds a USSF “C” license. Potempa graduated from Clemson with a B.A. degree in marketing in 2001. He played in the U17 Youth World Championships in Ecuador in 1995 and was a member of the U18 and U20 Men’s National teams during his playing career. While at Clemson, the defender was named to the 2000 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American team. He was also honored as an Academic All-American that same year. During his career, Potempa was named All-ACC in 1998, 1999, 2000. He was the first Clemson soccer player to be named Academic and on field All-American in the same year and is still one of just 15 Clemson athletes to accomplish this impressive double. He was also named a Soccer Times All-American in 1998. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2001 MLS Superdraft but had to retire due to injuries. He coached in Chicago, IL at North Shore Country Day as the varsity boys and girls coach in 2001-2002. He also coached a U14 girls and U12 boys team in Chicago for the Trevian Club. Between 2002-04, he was the Head of Soccer at Frederica Academy in St. Simons Island, Georgia. While there he coached the boys and girls varsity teams. In 2003, he coached the boy's team to the GISA State semi-finals in 2003 and to the region championship. He also led the girls to the GISA state championship in 2003 and region championships in 2002 and 2003. He was named GISA region coach of the year three times, and the GISA state coach of the year twice. Potempa also coached in the Golden Isles Soccer Club and coached an U14 boys team and an U13 girls team.

Phil Hindson
|
|
|
Phil Hindson is currently a men’s assistant coach at Clemson University. He holds a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a Scottish Football Association "C" Coaching License. Hindson was a three-time All-Conference, All-Region and 1995 All-America selection while playing for NAIA top-ranked William Carey College. He still holds several scoring records at William Carey with 54 goals and 22 assists for 130 points in three seasons. Hindson graduated with a B.S. degree in physical education with a minor in psychology at William Carey in 1999. He earned a master of science degree in physical education with an emphasis in health from Winthrop in 2005. Hindson's professional playing experience includes a two-year stint with Arbroath F.C. of the Scottish Second Division from 1993-94. In 1995, he was a forward for the Nashville Metros of United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues. From 1996-97 he was with the Cocoa Expos (USISL) which reached the national tournament both seasons. He closed out his professional career with the Pensacola Flyers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League.

Jason Dowiak
|
|
|
Jason Dowiak is head coach for the women's team at Anderson University since 2007. Dowiak, a native of Moorestown, N.J., was affiliated with the Ralph Lundy Soccer Academy before coming to Anderson. Dowiak played soccer at the College of Charleston for Lundy and earned a B.A. degree in communication in 2003. He earned a starting position as a freshman and was the Cougars’ captain as a senior. Dowiak’s coaching career started as an assistant coach at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind. After one year as an assistant, he was named interim head coach at St. Joseph’s for both the men’s and women’s programs. After leaving St. Joseph’s at the end of the ’05 season, Dowiak accepted a position as voluntary assistant at the College of Charleston. In August ’06, Dowiak was named assistant women’s coach at Lander University.

Ricky Lewis
|
|
|
Ricky Lewis played college soccer at Clemson University for three years from 2000 to 2002. A starter for all three years, Lewis finished his career at the school with ten goals and 12 assists in 61 games.
After his junior season, Lewis signed a Project-40 contract with MLS, and was selected 20th overall in the by the Los Angeles Galaxy, and played for the Colorado Rapids in 2004 and 2005. Lewis had five years of youth national team experience. He was the starting left back of the US Under-20 team which competed in the FIFA world Championship in 2001. He was also a member of the US Under-23 team which competed for a berth in the 2004 Olympics. During the final qualifying tournament, he played in 6 games, starting in the final three.

Danny Poe
|
|
|
A four starter at Clemson University. As a junior, he had three game-winning goals including two vs. top-five ranked teams ... had the game-winner against number-one ranked Maryland on September 8 in the Tigers' 2-1 win ... scored the game-winner against fifth-ranked North Carolina on Sepember 15, in Clemson's 1-0 victory ... also had the game winner in Clemson's 3-2 triumph over Furman on October 8. Danny also had a goal and an assist in the Georgia State match on August 29...finished the season with four goals and three assists and was named ACC Player of the Week on September 18 as he had the game-winner against North Carolina. Poe played for the Richmond Kickers of the Premier Development League in the summer of 2006.

Kristen Weiss
|
|
|
Kristen Weiss is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Clemson women's soccer program. She also serves as an assistant director for Clemson's women's soccer camps. Weiss works primarily with the forwards and midfielders along with all areas of team and individual practice sessions. Previously, Weiss served as an assistant coach for the U-14 and U-16 girls' teams with the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville-Albemarle in 2007. She has been an instructor at several youth soccer camps, including the University of Virginia, Christopher Newport University and Bowdoin College. She holds a USSF National "D" Coaching License.
Weiss played for Virginia from 2002-06, scoring 10 goals and 11 assists for her career. She was named to the ACC All-Tournament team in 2004, the year that the Cavaliers won their first conference title in school history. Weiss competed for the full United States National Team in 2001 and was also a member of the U-16, U-17 and U-19 Women's National Teams.

Pat Bryan
|
|
|
Pat played 4 years of high school varsity soccer at Eastside High School in Taylors, SC. Played for the Citadel in Charleston, SC as well as several military community teams. Coaching experience consists of boys and girls teams from U-6 to U-14 classic and recreational over the past 20 years. Currently holds a USSF "D" license and a NSCAA National Diploma. Married to Anne and has 3 children.

Alex Prostko
|
|
|
Alex played club soccer for over ten years, and was a 4 year starter on varsity for Easley High School. He currently is a student at Clemson University and will be graduating with a Secondary Education Science Teaching degree. Alex holds a USSF "D" coaching license and will pursue his "C" license in the near future. He is also on the national coaches registry through the American Sport Education Program.
Alex has coached with CASA for 4 years and has helped guide his U-15’s in becoming a top tier classic team within the past two years. He looks forward to becoming a High School Science teacher and coach. Alex also enjoys kayaking, mountain biking, rafting, and leading trips for the Clemson Outdoor Recreation Education Program. He is a first responder and is healthcare provider level CPR certified.

Stewart Hudspeth
|
|
|
Hudspeth is entering his second year as an assistant coach for the Trojans. He served as the assistant coach for the Anderson University Lady Trojans in 2006, and now assists the men's team along with serving as the head coach of the junior varsity program. He played two seasons at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky. He started for the nationally ranked Patriots and earned All-Conference honors. He finished his career at Auburn University, where he coached and captained the club team to the national tournament and the nation’s best record of 21-1. He also coached the Auburn High School boys' team during the '03 and '04 seasons. Hudspeth, who holds a NSCAA National Diploma and NSCAA Goalkeeping Diploma, has served as a trainer/coach for the Clemson Anderson Soccer Alliance since '06. He is currently furthering his education by pursuing his masters in education at Anderson University. Hudspeth has also been a South Carolina State ODP evaluator.

Ryan Roseberry
|
|
|
Ryan is the head girls varsity soccer coach at Westside High School, leading the Lady Rams their first ever playoff appearance in 2006, and to 10+ win seasons in 2005 ,2006, and 2007. He coached the League and State Champion U-14 X-Treme Girls in 2006-2007, and is currently the coach/trainer of the CASA U-16 Elite girls. Ryan played collegiately at Newberry College. Previous coaching experience consists of coaching the U-17 Girls AKSC Courage, U-18 Girls ASA Blue Crush, and the U-14 X-Treme Girls, and head coach at Westside for 5 years. He currently holds a USSF "C" License.

Dave Lewis
|
|
|
Dave is currently coaching the CASA U14 Storm. He is also an assistant coach for the Tri-County Tech men's team. Dave has previously coached U13-14 boys and girls for Papillion Soccer Club in Papillion, NE. He holds a USSF "D" license, and he plans on attending the "C" course in early 2009.
Dave was All-Region and Toast of the Coast while playing at Carolina Forest HS in Myrtle Beach, SC. He more recently played for the Offutt AFB club team in Bellevue, NE. With his NCAA eligibility still intact, Dave will look to play when he starts graduate school next year.

Richard Hazelwood
|
|
|
Richard has been playing soccer for 29 plus years; including 2 years in high school, one year Club and one year at Anderson University (formerly Anderson College) before shoulder injuries ended his collegiate play. His coaching experience consists of coed and girls teams from U-6 to U-14 Academy and recreational over the past 7 years, for a total of 33 teams coached. He currently holds a USSF Youth Module and a NSCAA National Diploma. He is married to Ann and has 4 children, all of whom he’s coached.

Steve Henderson
|
|
|
Steve Henderson was a four-year player for the Anderson Univeristy men’s program. He currently is an assistant women’s coach at Anderson University. Henderson has experience in both coaching and conditioning, as he has served as a coach and trainer for CASA the past two years as well as a staff coach at the Ralph Lundy Soccer Academy. Henderson graduated from AU in 2008 with a degree in English Literature.

Zach Owen
|
|
|
Zach Owen was born in Clemson, South Carolina. He Started playing club soccer at the age of 10 for the Clemson Area Soccer Club. He Captained the 89 Clemson Crew for 8 years. Zach played high school soccer for Daniel High School and was the captain for 2 out of his 4 years of Varsity Soccer. In his senior year he received North/South and All State honors. He is currently attending Clemson University studying Industrial Engineering. He is a member of the Clemson University Club team.

Garrett Lay
|
|
|
Garrett Lay is from Columbia, SC. He has eight years of playing experience at the club level, where he played for local clubs Columbia Soccer Club (CSC) and Columbia United Football Club (CUFC). He was a three year letterman at Irmo High School. Garrett was named All-Region, All-State, and was selected to represent South Carolina as one of the top 18 senior players in the first annual "Clash of the Carolina's" All Star game in 2007. In 2008 he played one season of college soccer on the NJCAA level at Tri County Technical College. He served as one of three captains and was a starting center back. He is currently a sophomore at Clemson University.

Justin Jones

|
Justin Jones played club soccer for NECSA, which is now known as Columbia FC. After graduating from Ridge View High School, he went on to play for Tri-County Technical College. He graduated from Tri-County with a degree in Engineering Graphics. He now attends Clemson University and is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering.

Alex Dorsam
|
|
|
Alex Dorsam is from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. He played club ball for Mount Pleasant Soccer Club for 9 years as well as 4 years for Wando High School. His club team played in 4 State Semi-finals and one State Championship, and spent one season in the Premier League. Alex was Wando High School�s team captain his senior year in 2006. Alex is currently a Junior at Clemson University and the president of his fraternity.

Arun Sathyanathan
|
|
|
Arun Sathyanathan has been playing soccer since the age of 4. He has won three state championships with three different teams, scoring the game winning goal in two of three state cup finals. He has played ODP for 6 years while going to regional camp two times and was selected for the under 14 National Camp in 2001. His high school accomplishments include being named all county twice, league MVP, and first team all state his senior year at Mason High School in Ohio. He played 1 year at Bowling Green State University where he scored the game winning goal in the MAC conference quarterfinals against Western Michigan. He is currently studying Financial Management with a minor in Economics at Clemson University where he is a member of the Club Soccer team.
